Two works, each subtitled “Moments Past”, are short, somewhat rambling , repetitive, episodic, very difficult, dissonant, developmental bits of composition, using several fragments borrowed from previous compositions, hence “Moments Past” or even “Moments Passed”!
Each of the works begins with a long slow introduction which introduces all of the principal musical material. This moves to a rapid 16th note repetitive passage that eventually introduces some of the material from the introduction in augmentation over the repeated 16th note passages. An interlude, recounting the opening elements of the introduction eventually leads back to the 16th note repetitive passages, this time more dramatic than the first. A long, reflective interlude, based on the first material, leads to a final repetition of the 16th note passages, even more dramatic than the previous two. This section culminates in an extended dramatic statement of the original material, with the final section, the coda, incorporating many of the elements developed during the piece.
